  • I just saw on the news that AFCD is proposing two new mountain bike trails in Tai Lam Country park. The only issue is that the villagers in So Kun Wat oppose it. The government is meant to be mediating on this.

Does anyone know anything about the routes that have been proposed?

  • Nope. Have not heard the specifics yet.

But if this trail (road) opening means that we can ride legally down So Kwun Wat Tsuen Rd. then I think it means that the AFCD are listening to the MTB community since that is the natural exit/entry route for the Tai Lam Reservoir trail that goes to the Gold Coast. This is a very important route for MTB in in HK since the Tai Lam Reservoir trail is probably the best beginner trail that we have and the opening of this route makes MTB much more accessible to new riders.

Hopefully we can assure the villagers that MTB riders are polite and are not nearly as dangerous as the minibuses that fly down parts of the same road.

  • Dunno really. The AFCD may simply be in the consultation phase with local villagers to ensure that there will be no troubles before they can formally request/recommend these routes be opened. Anyway, its at least a step in the right direction and opening this access road make perfect sense. We and other MTB groups have been asking to get this road opened for a long time now.

  • Probably a good time to get in touch with AFCD to see if we can help pacify the villagers. We should also point out that MTBers are a good source of income for the village store and noodle shop!

  • I went to the Tai Lam Resevoir loop with fellow MTB beginners last Sunday morning doing it counter-clockwise. The first part is the concrete path which involves climbs. One of first-timers (not ridden for 1 yrs+) got really winded under the hot & humid weather. After we went past the dam, the guy really could not continue with anymore uphill climb and called it quits.

The sign on the So Kwun Wat Tsuen Rd is still no bicycle allowed, not even walking the bike. Anyway safety first so we took our chances and headed down the road to the nearest gas station and called hire-a-van.

  • I am heading off to St Moritz in Switzerland next month for a riding holiday.
The trail in this video was purpose built and looks incredible. This is the kind of all-new trail we should be pushing for on Tai Mo Shan - from the car park near the observatory down towards a link up with route TWISK. That would really put us on the mountain-biking map.

  • Rode this a year ago when it was still under construction, awesome trail! Plus there's many other long distance trails from the upper cable car that are worth doing.
