Training for Beginners on 2 July?

6 years 4 months ago #2656 by cheshire
Hi, My friend and I have enrolled the 12K MTB trail race at HK Disney on 15 Jul. We dont have any MTB off road experience and I am riding RB currently. Anyone know where I can find basics training for beginners and try to ride off road somewhere?

Many Thanks,
Jessica

Book a course with CrossCountryHK (bikesteve runs it). He'll teach you all you need to know, and I've found a course with him to be the max bang-per-buck on bike-related stuff.

The 12K MTB trail race shouldn't, however, be too difficult even for a pure road cyclist, since it's just in a field. When I did it last year it was just a long, hard slog with only 1 or 2 dips. I'm told the course is slightly better (more exciting now) though.

I have contacted Steve and will join a beginner course on 2 July.

Slayer is right. The Sportsoho course is fairly straightforward but fun so enjoy the race atmosphere without too much worry about it getting to technical.

Steve will give you the skills to go tackle the more enjoyable trails we have in HK and some of the more advance races held by hKCA and Action Asia.

I joined the Disneyland grassland race with a couple riding buddies in January 2012, weather was nice and the atmosphere was great.

The course is mostly flat grassland with a few sand dump, suitable for all levels. Like YW said, there were a few dips along the course when you cross the storm drainage. There is no rock garden and jump.

A hardtail would be suitable for the grassland race course.

Goto Steve's training first, then join the race.

I highly recommend a fast, XC-style hardtail for this race. I took my Remedy (an all-mountain bike) there and found it to be terribly ill-suited to the race. I ended up with a DNF, although that MAY also have had something to do with the 1/2 hour of sleep I'd had the night before (after travelling and work), as well as my total lack of training.

I rode my old Fuel Ex6, the grassland is just too flat and not much use for a full suspension frame.

I broke the chain 5 minutes into the race; hata push the bike back to get a chain tool. Fixed the chain in 15 min and got back out and enjoyed the race, haha!
