    Another trail in Tai Lam Country Park will soon be legalized. This trail known by many as "Tin Man" or the "Fire Station Trail" is about 5km long and will no doubt be everyone's favorite haunt in the years to come.

    There is a catch however. The AFCD wants you to help build it. Beginning in January 2012 Tony Boone from IMBA Trail Solutions will return to oversee the trail design and help train local volunteers to assist in building it.

    Last Spring Tony helped train volunteers and AFCD to build the short beginner trail at Route Twisk. This collective effort proved first hand that building sustainable and fun mountain bike trails in the Country Parks is a real possibility and does not require tens of millions of dollar and the mega-engineering forces of the CEDD to accomplish. It just needs a good sustainable design, simple tools and folks willing to work hard, side by side and grow this sport together, metre by metre.

    The AFCD has allocated a limited number spots for HKMBA members to join the workshop on one of four days in January. These spots will be allocated on a first come, first serve basis. The HKMBA will collect the names of our volunteers and forward them onto the AFCD by Dec 21st, 2011.

    Venue: meet at Route Twisk Management Centre at 9:00am, then we shall depart to Tin Fu Tsai after a short seminar.

    Materials and equipment: to be provided by AFCD (but volunteers are expected to wear suitable clothing, and bring their own drinking water and lunch)

    Transportation: Transportation within the country park will be provided by AFCD. Depending on the demand, the AFCD may also offer a shuttle bus from MTR Station to Twisk Management Centre in the morning.

    So finally people at the AFCD are listening... hope someone has managed to take some photos on the contrsuction work inbetween all the digging... or perhaps they've a GoPro strapped to their shovel and there'll be some shovel-cam(tm) footage? :woohoo: :P

    Anyway, new trails are obviously welcome, but given the location... have the AFCD made any noises about improving access to the entire network?

    The Tai Lam Chung Reservoir loop currently has only one legal access route, which is the storm run-off drain steps near Sui Lam(?). What about making legal access via the West side near Pak Shek Hang, which is already paved. Then what about from the north side from Ho Pui/Ma On Kong? The Ho Pui part of the paved road has a sign, which should mean that part is country park land (and thus AFCD?) rather than villager/punti land? Then I believe there is a fork of paved road that ends near the Tai Lam Bus interchange?

    The later northern access route could be tied in with urban cycle routes from the Kam Sheung Road MTR station, what with the MTR now (finally!) allowing bicycles on to their network.

    All your points have been raised repeatedly in meetings we have had with government departments over the past few years. There are so many stakeholders in play including Land Dept, AFCD, Villagers, Hikers, WSD, TD, LCSD and so on. If one of these groups says "no" for whatever reason then its hard to coerce them from the outside. Its very frustrating indeed.

    We have made formal requests through political channels to even get a reservoir loop in Sai Kung opened to cycling (taxis are allowed) but WSD seem to have their own and often and inconsistent standards by which they evaluate cycling safety on their service roads and dont seem inclined to listen to reason. Many suitable WSD roads offer convenient access/exit to/from the Tai Lam network but are off limits for now.

    Hopefully, as the various govt depts learn more about cycling/mountain biking via ours and other groups advocacy efforts and perhaps with some policy coercion from the senior levels of govt this will change.

    A fully integrated and networked cycling path system for all kinds of cyclists would be a dream come true this vision was presented to HAB (the policy makers for sport) last year. I would like to think that they are still thinking about this concept.

    It doesn't help that the HKCA is asleep at the wheel either...

  • Results from the "Tai Lam Mountain Bicycling Trail Study Executive Summary" conducted by IMBA Trail Solutions last year. Released in March 2011.

    Of four potential new trails studied, Tin Man had the highest average score. Plus this study will give the reader some objective insight into how highly qualified and experienced trail experts view many of the most popular trails in Tai Lam. It was not an exhaustive study however and they do recommend further study on a wider scope and that a master trail network plan be drafted for the future..

  • Today was the last of the scheduled Tin Man building workshop thingies... so wondering how's it gone? I guess there's still on going work just on that one to be done? No idea if the rain helped or impeded... :lol:

  • I was up there yesterday digging and and managed to get a snapshot of the route map. I believe we are at the last switch back before the end (75% of the way from the picnic area). It will join the the existing Tin Man (blue line) about 150m down from the fire lookout.

    Rain was not too much of a problem and I did not hear a single complaint about it from the 25+ people who were digging. Everyone seemed very motivated playing an important part in building a special trail.

  • Yes it can be ridden both ways, the idea will be to open this stage as soon as its finished whilst the work is carried out on the rest of Tin Man (which may take some months).
    Although there is a rise steadily up to the lookout its really not that noticable as the trail is full of rolling curves that continually rise and drop. Great fun!
