Following the AA event at Chi Ma Wan last weekend, it’s obvious there is a core group of MTBers in HK motivated enough to turn up and ride hard on a weekend. For those of us with an interest in competition, whether the intention is on training for races, or simply to test yourself against like-minded crew and push your personal limits, there aren’t many options for group rides.

I’m considering putting together a couple of events in the first half of 2011, with the emphasis on keeping it simple. There’ll be no prizes or cash for the winners, but there won’t be an entry fee either; if anything, there may be a token donation to the ‘Cup’ fund, and this would be put towards buying a few beers and drinks for consumption at the end of a ride; anything remaining in the kitty at the conclusion of the series could go towards a presentation night perhaps . . .

Whilst the prizes might be lacking, the competition hopefully won’t be. Points could be awarded for the top finishers at each event, and a cumulative pointscore over the series could be used to decide an overall winner. The emphasis would be on getting together one morning every month to challenge yourself, and see how your level of riding compares to your peers.

In terms of standards, it would be targeted at those who could complete a couple of laps of the Chi Ma Wan course at a fair pace . . . the aim would be to make the rides available to anyone able to handle themselves on the bike, and with a good level of fitness.

By not labelling it as a race per se, nor charging entry fees, we may be able to run a series that requires minimum logistical endeavour, and avoid the bureaucratic red tape; as a ‘group ride’, and not an official race, this would mean that you assume full responsibility for participating, and remain aware of the likely risks, as you would any time you head out on a ride.

This would also entail a form of community responsibility; we could do it with a minimum of 3-5 volunteers, and 1-3 riders would need to participate as organiser and sweep(s) for race day, but that duty might only fall upon you once a season. Rider volunteers would earn points for the race they weren’t able to compete in, so that they would still be eligible for the overall pointscore, as a motivation and reward for helping out. Riders on course would also need to cover each other; though it’s a competitive group ride, it would be incumbent upon the participants to help out a fellow MTBer in real physical or mechanical distress.

The fine print still needs to be defined, but at this stage I’m just trying to raise interest, and gauge whether it could be a viable project. Dates and locations for the rides would be posted well in advance on a Facebook group page, or a similar site, and you could register your intention to participate on the site also; that way, everyone remains in the loop, and we’d know in advance how many people to expect.

There’s a few of us out here that would love to see it happen, so if it sounds like something you’d be interested in, please post on the Facebook page Hong Kong MTB or email This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.
